Tips on Safely Lighting a Fire Pit

Lighting a fire pit safely and properly is essential for enjoying a safe and cozy fire in your backyard. With the right knowledge and safety measure, you can create a warm and inviting atmosphere. It's a skill worth mastering, and once you have the know-how, you'll be able to create that warm fire whenever you need. Following these steps will help you safely and effectively light your fire pit.

DIY Project Steps

1. Place kindling in the fire pit

Place the kindling in a small pyramid or teepee shape at the base of the fire pit. Start with the thinnest pieces of kindling at the bottom and gradually increase the size of the sticks as you build upwards.

Tip: Avoid packing the kindling too tightly as airflow is required for a fire to ignite and burn.

2. Place firelighters

Place the fire lighters at the centre and within the the kindling structure. Make sure you position most of them in a way that will be easily ignited.

3. Start the fire

Using matches or a lighter carefully light the firelighters and start with one or two firelighters. Ensuring that the flame catches and starts to spread across the firelighter.

Tip: Once the firelighters are lit, watch the fire and ensure the flames are spreading to the surrounding kindling. Keep a safe distance and avoid placing your face directly over the fire.

4. Place cut wood on top

As the kindling ignites, slowly introduce larger firewood pieces to the fire pit. Try to maintain the teepee or log cabin structure, to promote proper airflow within the fire and enable burning. Adding larger firewood gradually, allows you to maintain a consistent and long-lasting fire in your fire pit.

Remember, safety is paramount when dealing with fire. Always exercise caution and follow council regulations.
